Within the sports admin class, several guest speakers come in to talk to us about their personal experience and how they got to where they are now. Athletic Director Bill Popp was the guest speaker for today's class.
Coach Popp graduated from KSU in 1992 with a degree in sports management. As part of his degree he had to complete and internship, he did this at Oglethorpe University after completing this one thing lead to another and he was given the head baseball coaching position at the age of 23. He remained there for 12 years until interviewed for the position at Reinhardt. There were 75 applicants for the job and he was the lucky one. Two years later he was the promoted to AD as well as head baseball coach. Within the last six months Popp had to step down as the baseball coach and become the first full time AD at Reinhardt due to the coming of football at the school.
Popp has many duties as an AD, such as giving coaches their scholarship $, more specifically their budgets which covers a lot of areas within a team. Also eligibility is a big deal for him as that is key within college sports. Finally, recruiting and retaining athletes is huge for him as the department has to meet specifications every year.
I really enjoyed listening to what coach Popp had to say about his own experiences but also the future plans for the school. He is a great guy to have has AD at the school.
